Position Overview

The Training & Volunteer Manager strengthens Special Olympics Maine by building confident leaders, informed volunteers, and empowered athletes. This role leads the organization’s learning and development strategy—ensuring staff, volunteers, coaches, athletes, and board members have access to high-quality, inclusive, and practical training.

You’ll manage a centralized training library, deliver in-person and virtual trainings, and serve as a trusted resource for guidance and support. You’ll also lead volunteer recruitment, retention, and training efforts, and oversee Athlete Leadership programming, working with athletes as partners in shaping meaningful leadership opportunities.

This role requires a unified, inclusive mindset and a passion for collaboration. You’ll actively involve athletes, coaches, and volunteers in decision-making, build strong relationships across the organization, and connect people to resources and opportunities to grow.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Learning Development

  • Develop, deliver, and maintain comprehensive training programs for staff, volunteers, coaches, athletes, Area Managers, and board members.
  • Create and manage a centralized training library, including curricula, recordings, guides, and learning pathways.
  • Design trainings for multiple learning styles and formats; document all materials for accessibility and consistency.
  • Assess training needs, identify gaps, and recommend or develop solutions.

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Lead and support leadership trainings, including Area Managers Retreat, Coaches College, Staff Retreat, Board Retreat, and Athlete Leadership Retreat.
  • Ensure training aligns with organizational goals and improves performance; evaluate impact and continuously improve.

Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

  • Lead statewide volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, retention, and recognition efforts.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteer support.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, training completion data, and participation metrics.

Athlete Leadership

  • Lead and maintain Athlete Leadership programming in alignment with Special Olympics Athlete Leadership principles.
  • Partner with athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities to co-create trainings, leadership pathways, and roles of responsibility.
  • Ensure Athlete Leadership is integrated across training, volunteer development, and organizational culture.

Networking, Systems & Collaboration

  • Create internal networking opportunities across stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate across Programs, Sports, UCS, Health, Development, Operations, and Marketing.
  • Manage training technologies and maintain well-documented, efficient systems.

General Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site leadership at statewide events (e.g., Summer Games, Winter Games, Lobster Dip).
  • Participate in professional development and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in training, learning & development, volunteer management, education, or related fields (mission-driven experience preferred; equivalent experience welcomed in place of a degree).
  • Demonstrated success delivering trainings for diverse audiences.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Inclusive, systems-oriented, highly organized, and adaptable.
  • Comfortable working across in-person and virtual formats and traveling in-state.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; stand, walk, bend, and travel long distances.
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings/weekends and overnight travel for statewide events.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $56,000- $65,000
  • Benefits: 100% employer-paid health, dental, and disability
  • Time Off: 18 days of paid time off (PTO) to start (with increases after 3 years), 10 paid holidays, and flexible scheduling to balance evening and weekend event hours.
