Job Description
Senior Packaging Engineer – Product Development
Location: Brooklyn, NY (2/3 days per week onsite)
Salary: $100,000
Role Overview
This role owns the entire packaging development journey—from early concept through full-scale commercialization. You’ll be the technical authority behind packaging decisions, ensuring designs are innovative, functional, and production-ready while meeting the highest standards for quality and brand execution.
This is an opportunity for a hands-on, technically strong packaging engineer who thrives in fast-moving environments, enjoys building processes, and wants real ownership over outcomes. You’ll partner closely with internal teams and external suppliers, serving as the central hub for all packaging development activity.
What You’ll Do
- Own end-to-end packaging development for primary and secondary components, from concept ideation through launch
- Review, approve, and refine technical drawings to ensure manufacturability, performance, and quality
- Launch new packaging briefs with suppliers and guide development timelines from kickoff to approval
- Evaluate and recommend packaging formats based on formula compatibility (viscosity, pH, material interaction, reactivity)
- Set up, review, and interpret compatibility testing; proactively identify risks and define mitigation strategies
- Plan and execute transit, functionality, and performance testing to validate packaging designs
- Lead production and line trials, document outcomes, and troubleshoot manufacturing or operational challenges
- Identify cost-saving, material optimization, and sustainability opportunities without compromising brand integrity or quality
- Act as the technical lead in cross-functional packaging meetings, translating complex details into clear decisions
- Manage artwork and proof release processes in partnership with creative teams and external vendors
- Own packaging color development and ensure consistency from development through production
- Build, maintain, and continuously improve specification databases for components and finished goods
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or a related technical discipline
- 3+ years of hands-on packaging development experience, ideally within consumer-facing products
- Strong technical understanding of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and sustainability considerations
- Demonstrated experience leading full lifecycle packaging development, including compatibility, functionality, and transit testing
- High proficiency reviewing technical drawings and creating detailed packaging and finished good specifications
- Exceptional organization, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Comfort operating in fast-paced, evolving environments where priorities shift and ownership matters
- Experience in startup or high-growth environments strongly preferred
Why This Role Stands Out
- High ownership and visibility across product launches
- Ability to influence packaging strategy, materials, and innovation decisions
- Hands-on exposure from concept to production—not a siloed role
- Opportunity to build and refine packaging processes in a growing organization
- Strong benefits including a 10% target bonus, health, dental and vision coverage amongst others.
